Sam is a seven-year-old, 75 lb male Great Pyrenees pulled from a Texas animal shelter in July 2022. His history is not well known, but it’s evident he spent most of his life outside and was betrayed by humans. Sam is docile but also shy and wary of human intentions. His time in foster care has been one of personal growth and a lesson on faith in his caregivers. He is slow to warm up, but the beauty begins when you gain his trust. Sam is the perfect dog for you if you want a low to moderate-energy companion around the house and want to see a dog blossom in a safe environment.
Sam is beyond loyal and loves his humans dearly. He is a cuddle bug and loves keeping an eye on his people. Being within arm’s reach is his favorite, more opportunities for pets! He loves car rides and is good on a leash. Sam is highly independent like most adult Pyrs and is exceptional in that he rarely barks. He loves chasing squirrels in the backyard, tussling with his foster sister (a puppy), and is respectful of boundaries, whether it is other pets’ need for space or his foster mom’s need for room in the kitchen.
Sam will rest peacefully in the crate if he has to but prefers to free-roam the house. Due to his long time as an outdoor/neglected dog, his potty training is slowly coming around. He is currently on a regular schedule and prefers the human to walk him into the grass and queue him. He has been in foster care for a month, and his accidents are now rare. The belly band has been instrumental in helping him learn.
Sam knows “no,” and “sit,” there is little need for him to know “here” because he is likely already at your side. His personality traits include shyness, curiosity, and responsiveness to training. Sam has no interest in cats and would be suitable in a home as an only pet or with calm/older dogs, kiddos 15+ years old and with large animal experience. Sam will make an excellent family companion.
